Discounted lung cancer screenings have been extended through the end of 2014. These low-dose spiral computed tomography (CT) scans typically cost $375, but through Dec. 31, Blount Memorial Hospital is offering spiral CT tests at a discounted cost of $95.
This screening can identify small lung cancers in people who are current or former heavy smokers. Many people with early stage lung cancer don’t notice the symptoms, while others mistakenly believe that increased breathlessness and coughing are normal parts of aging. In fact, lung cancer can develop for years without noticeable shortness of breath. When lung cancer is detected early, effective treatment is possible. These state-of-the-art screenings have been shown to reduce lung cancer deaths by nearly 20 percent.
The discounted screenings are available to adults ages 55-74 who are current heavy smokers with a smoking history of 30 years or more (either one pack per day for 30 years or two packs per day for 15 years); are former heavy smokers who have quit within the last 15 years; have no previous diagnosis of lung cancer, pulmonary nodules or related symptoms such as shortness of breath, unusual or persistent chest or back pain, and coughing up blood; have a written order from a physician or other health care provider; and have not undergone a chest CT within the last 18 months.
Discount screenings will be offered at two locations, including Blount Memorial Hospital and East Tennessee Medical Group, located at 266 Joule St.
