Substance Abuse Prevention Action Team Receives National Recognition

The Blount County Substance Abuse Prevention Action Team (SAPAT) recently was recognized in the American Hospital Association’s 2015 edition of “Community Connections: Ideas & Innovations for Hospital Leaders,” an annual publication that features case examples of successful initiatives from across the country.

Only two programs from each state and Washington, D.C. are selected every year, qualifying for one of four categories including Social and Basic Needs, Health Promotion, Access and Coverage, and Quality of Life. The Substance Abuse Prevention Action Team was included in the Quality of Life section for its efforts to reduce substance abuse county-wide.

The Substance Abuse Prevention Action Team is designed to address the challenge of reducing youth tobacco use, underage drinking and prescription medication misuse in Blount County by partnering with local agencies, including law enforcement, to provide educational opportunities, advocate policy enforcement and promote prevention activities.
