Shattuck and Edele Receive 2015 THA Awards

Blount Memorial Hospital stroke medical director and hospitalist Dr. Deaver Shattuck and former auxiliary president Ron Edele received 2015 Meritorious Service Awards from the Tennessee Hospital Association (THA).

The awards were presented Thursday, Oct. 1 and Friday, Oct. 2 at THA’s annual meeting in Nashville.

Shattuck was recognized for his dedication to the hospital’s stroke program and his work to ensure Blount Memorial’s stroke care matches the performance levels of top-performing hospitals across the country. Those efforts led to Blount Memorial’s voluntary Joint Commission on Accreditation of Heatlhcare Organizations disease-specific certification for stroke care. “It’s hard to look within the Blount Memorial Hospital system to see an initiative, project or endeavor that doesn’t have a part of Shattuck’s work included in it,“ said Blount Memorial CEO Don Heinemann. “Blount Memorial Hospital and the Blount County community truly are honored to have such dedication, leadership, professionalism, expertise and compassion – and in one man,” he added. Shattuck has been with Blount Memorial since 1996.

Edele was honored for his commitment and dedication to the volunteer work done by the Blount Memorial Auxiliary, which has more than 200 members. During his time as Auxiliary president, Edele immersed himself in hospital strategic planning activities, customer service initiatives, growing the Auxiliary’s volunteer base and creating new patient services. “Serving people is exactly what Edele was meant to do,” said Heinemann. “It’s demonstrated every day as he carried out not only his presidential duties, but also his volunteer tasks.” Edele has been a volunteer at Blount Memorial since 2010.

Shattuck and Edele were among the 26 individuals honored by the THA at this year’s meeting. Awards were presented in 14 categories, recognizing the contributions of everyone from hospital volunteers and frontline staff to executives and trustees. The Tennessee Hospital Association was founded in 1938 and serves as an advocate for hospitals, health systems and other healthcare organizations across the state. The initiatives of THA support the efforts of Tennessee’s hospitals to ensure high quality care for the patients and communities they serve.
