For many parents, the decision to proceed with surgery for their child’s tonsils, adenoids or ear infections can be a difficult one. While concerns about any medical procedure are understandable, there are clear advantages to these common surgeries when performed for the right reasons. Addressing chronic infections or breathing issues by placing ear tubes or removing the tonsils and adenoids can lead to significant improvements in a child’s health and quality of life.
Tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy typically are performed for two primary reasons: recurring infections or obstructive symptoms. “When children meet specific criteria for surgery, we expect to see a significant improvement in their quality of life,” explained Dr. Bryan Tigner with Blount Memorial Physicians Group – Ear, Nose and Throat. “For children with chronic infections, removing the tonsils and adenoids results in fewer missed school days and fewer missed workdays for parents. It also reduces the number of infections and, in turn, the need for antibiotics.”
Frequent antibiotic use for recurrent infections can disrupt the balance of healthy bacteria in the gastrointestinal tract, leading to side effects such as diarrhea. “More and more research is pointing to the varied health benefits of maintaining a healthy gut microbiome,” Tigner said. “Reducing antibiotic use by addressing the root cause of infections is an added benefit of these procedures.” In severe cases, chronic tonsillitis can lead to complications such as tonsil abscesses, rheumatic fever or kidney problems, making surgical intervention a preventive measure, as well.
When enlarged tonsils and adenoids cause obstructive symptoms, such as difficulty breathing during sleep, surgery can have a significant impact on overall well-being. “Improved sleep quality has been shown to support cognitive development, immune function and reduced stress,” Tigner explained. “Once the obstruction is removed, children often experience improvements in eating, speaking and overall energy levels.”
For children who suffer from frequent ear infections, ear tube placement can provide similar benefits. Recurring ear infections can cause discomfort, disrupt sleep, and impact mood and behavior. Ear tubes help by allowing fluid to drain properly, preventing infections from recurring as frequently. “One of the biggest advantages of ear tubes is that they allow us to use medicated ear drops instead of oral antibiotics,” Tigner said. “This helps treat infections more effectively while avoiding the side effects of repeated antibiotic use.”
Beyond reducing infections, ear tubes can also improve hearing in young children. Persistent fluid buildup in the middle ear can affect speech and language development, making early intervention important. “Better hearing supports better speech development, which is crucial during early childhood,” Tigner added. In the long term, treating chronic ear infections with tubes can help prevent complications such as permanent eardrum damage or the formation of cholesteatomas, which can require more extensive treatment.
For parents weighing the options for their child’s ear, nose and throat health, understanding the potential benefits of these procedures is essential. Whether addressing chronic infections, improving sleep, or supporting speech and development, these surgeries can provide long-term health improvements and peace of mind.
