Healing Wounds, Restoring Lives

Wounds are more than just cuts or scrapes. Some wounds, especially those that don’t heal quickly, need special care to prevent serious problems. Wound care impacts millions of people worldwide, which is why June is Wound Healing Awareness Month, a time set aside to learn about how wounds heal and when to get help. “Wound Healing Awareness Month is a chance for us to teach people how important wound care really is,” said Maria Edge, manager of the Prisma Health Wound Healing Center-Maryville. “With the right care, we can help people heal faster, stay out of the hospital and get back to enjoying life.”

Some wounds take longer to heal because of other health problems, such as diabetes, poor blood flow or pressure injuries. These wounds need extra care. If left untreated, they can lead to infections or even more serious health issues. At the Prisma Health Wound Healing Center-Maryville, patients receive care from a team that knows how to treat these kinds of wounds using the latest tools and treatments. The team focuses on the underlying nature of the wound while looking at other conditions that may prevent healing. Once the cause of the wound is found, the team creates an individualized care plan for that patient and their circumstances.

There are many things that help a wound heal. Keeping the wound clean and covered is one of the first steps. Watching closely for signs of infection, such as redness, swelling or odor, also is important. If a wound is not getting better, it may be time to see a wound care specialist. In addition to preventing infections, healing wounds can improve quality of life if the wound affects mobility. “Wound care is not just about healing the skin,” said Edge. “It’s also about helping people move more easily, feel better and stay healthy. We work with each person to make sure they get the care that’s right for them.”

Wounds can start in many ways. Some are caused by surgery or injuries, while others develop slowly because of health problems and take longer to heal. No matter the cause, wound care centers can help. The Prisma Health Wound Healing Center-Maryville uses special treatments such as advanced dressings, medicine and therapy to help wounds heal faster. Getting help early makes a big difference. If someone notices that a cut, sore or wound is not healing like it should, it’s important to talk to a doctor or visit a wound care center. Treating a wound early can help avoid pain, infection and hospital stays. “Many people don’t realize how serious a wound can become. That’s why we want to raise awareness and make sure everyone knows help is available here,” Edge said.

Wound Healing Awareness month reminds us all to take wound care seriously. If you or someone you know has a wound that isn’t healing, don’t wait. Getting the right treatment early can make a big difference.
