Blount Memorial Among U.S. News & World Report Best Hospitals

Blount Memorial Hospital is ranked among U.S. News & World Report’s Best Hospitals ranking for 2019-20, receiving “High Performing” status – the highest-possible rating, and significantly better than the national average – in the areas of heart failure and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

The annual rankings, released on July 30, are designed to help patients and their doctors make informed decisions about where to receive care for challenging health conditions or common elective procedures. For the 2019-20 rankings, U.S. News & World Report evaluated data on nearly 5,000 hospitals in 25 specialties, procedures and conditions.

In both the COPD and heart failure specialties, hospital scores are based on data such as patient volume and patient survival rates. For COPD, Blount Memorial was deemed “excellent” in patient volume, which is associated with better outcomes, and “better than average” in discharging patients to their homes, rather than to another facility, following a hospital stay. For heart failure, Blount Memorial ranked as “excellent” in patient discharge rates, “better than average” in patient survival rates and “very high” in patient volume.

“It’s an incredible honor to be recognized for COPD care and cardiac care by U.S. News & World Report,” said Blount Memorial Hospital CEO Don Heinemann. “These are conditions that are all too common in our community, and this reflects our commitment to giving the people of Blount County the quality care they need so that there’s no need to go anywhere else to be treated for COPD or heart failure. I’d like to congratulate our physicians and staff for all the hard work they’ve done to earn this recognition,” he added.
